Freya is a Los Angeles Native. Intrigued as a child by bellydancers seen in old James Bond movies, Freya has dedicated herself to Bellydance for nearly a decade. She’s been influenced by some of the West Coast’s greatest teachers, including Tonya Chanis, Mesmera and Delilah. These teachers’ emphasis on cultivation of personal style led Freya to dub her style of dance EclecticBelly.
Freya’s Eclecticbelly is a living dance style that won’t be given one descriptive term by its creator. Rather, it is a dynamic, evolving vision of Bellydance that is shared with audiences and students alike. With a strong emphasis on technique, Freya weaves together Bellydance influences that span home-spun American Cabaret, classic Egyptian, earthy Lebanese, and mystical North African Guedra. To throw BD aficionados off the scent, Freya is never afraid to fuse a cued Tribal move with an Egyptian dance combination spliced from 50’s movie footage. She weaves past, present and future into performances. Whether it’s performing a Kabuki-styled Three Faces of the Moon, or conjuring images of Egyptian goddesses as Troupe Bast, or playfully storytelling the Tale of the Mischievous Veil, Freya is always dedicated to offering audiences creativity, passion and sensuality.
Over the past 2 years, Freya has been committed to encouraging women to be communal with one another and has strived to create atmospheres where women can genuinely communicate with one another, dance freely and beautifully, and to share information. Towards this goal, she created BellySpa, a day-long Womens’ Conference. Last year’s inaugural event provided women with an opportunity to enjoy workshops from such notables as Dr. Sunyatta Amen and Delilah. Participants also enjoyed a yoga experience and massage. Freya’s mission to empower women also gave genesis to her Mommy and Me bellydance workshops where mothers and their children take part in a shared experience that is nurturing, healthy and fun.
In the everyday world, Freya is a school counselor, working with children with Special Needs and their families. A graduate of Cal State Northridge, she also holds post-graduate degrees in Psychology and Education. For relaxation, Freya dances of course, and does a little gardening.
